Roberta introduces us to Fede- She remembered seeing the teenage Federico on his motorcycle back in the 60's, tooling around Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Now, all these years later, they had become good friends.

Fede's bad reputation- He had a bad reputation left over from a difficult and dissipated time in his life, things that had gone down years before. The Ladies of San Giorgio would speak of him in dark tones of disapprobation- Federico the Communist, the Druggie, the Anarchist, the Loner.

The recitation- Some of his old friends called him "Il Lupo Grigio", "The Grey Wolf," and I know he liked the name. But Lawren and I never called him that- to us, he was always "Fede."
